An aquarium is home to your pet fish. You should always care for your pet’s habitat regularly and diligently, making sure it is suitable for them to grow and flourish. Although some breeds of fish may require special attention, general aquarium maintenance can be used for all types of fish. The three basic factors on aquarium maintenance are overcrowding, overfeeding, and infrequent changing of water. All these factors have negative effects on water quality.
Cleaning the tank is one of the chief tasks you need to do. First, you need to unplug all electronic devices such as water pump, heater, light, and air pump and remove them. The heater should be unplugged for at least 15 minutes prior to removing it. Clean the heater and filter with plain water, and use a toothbrush to scrub the corners. Use the rough side of a sponge to clean the inside of your aquarium. Clean and store the sponge, and use it exclusively for your tank. Siphon the water from the bottom of tank into a bucket or container to clean sand and gravel. However, drain off only half of the water to leave room for the fish to swim. Take out the tank decorations and clean them without soap. Replace the decorations, heater, and pump with new filter. Fill the tank up and treat the water for optimum quality. Finally plug all the electronic devices back in.
